o Arlington-Based Advantia Health Lands $45 Million Investment

Arlington, Va. — Advantia Health, an Arlington-based provider of technology-enabled women’s healthcare services, said it has landed a $45 million investment from BlueMountain Capital Management. The company, which also is backed by Deerfield Management, said it will use the new capital to bring on more providers and women-focused specialties, as well as expand its technology offerings. The company also plans to build a flagship women’s health practice in DC that will integrate OB-GYN, primary care, mental wellness and other health services. Jim Pieri, the head of private healthcare at BlueMountain, and Ameya Agge, managing director at BlueMountain, will join the company’s board of directors. The news follows a year of rapid growth for the company, which acquired Heartland Women’s Healthcare in the Midwest and Pacify, developer of a telehealth app offering on-demand support to new mothers.

o Report: White House to Name SBA’s Maria Roat as Deputy Federal CIO

Washington, DC — The White House plans to tap Maria Roat, currently the chief information officer (CIO) of the Small Business Administration (SBA), as the next deputy federal CIO, Nextgov reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter. If she accepts the position, she would succeed Margie Graves, who left the Office of Management and Budget at the end of last year. The position is a key one for the government, in charge of leading all IT policy. Roat has served in her current role since 2016, after previously serving as chief technology officer (CTO) of the Department of Transportation and FedRAMP director at the Department of Homeland Security.

o DC-Based VEDA Data Solutions Lands $5 Million in First Round of Funding 

Washington, DC — VEDA Data Solutions, a DC-based developer of AI and machine learning tools designed to eliminate data inaccuracies in healthcare, has raised $5 million in its first round of funding. Technical.ly DC first reported the news, which the company confirmed on Twitter. Empactful Capital led the round, which also included participation from HealthX Ventures, Sunwater Capital and New Dominion Angels. VEDA, which now has raised $7 million since its inception, said it will use the proceeds to further develop its core platform, which turns raw, sometime inaccurate data like claims, rosters, contracts and referrals into accurate directories and live network adequacy maps. “We are thrilled to start the year with new strategic partners, the capital to grow our platform and a shiny new patent,” the company posted on Twitter.

o TEDCO Awards $2.6M in Funding Through Maryland Innovation Initiative

Columbia, Md. — The Maryland Technology Development Corp. (TEDCO) said it has awarded $2.6 million in new funding through its Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII), which aims to accelerate promising technologies with commercial potential from five area universities. So far this fiscal year, the program has awarded grants to 19 projects, including an integrated onboard charger for electric vehicles from the University of Maryland College Park; an improved hybrid vertical axis wind turbine from the University of Maryland Baltimore County; a therapeutic nanoparticle platform for Fn14-Positive cancers from the University of Maryland, Baltimore; and, from Johns Hopkins University, a technology for improved drug delivery to the eye and engineered bispecific antibodies for targeted inhibition of cancer metastasis. The fund also has invested in three Baltimore-based companies: Neurologic Solutions, is Hopkins spinout developing a novel tool for seizure localization in medically refractory epilepsy; Halocytech, a Morgan State University spinout developing large-scale production of natural bio-products from cyanobacteria; and Prebeo, a University of Maryland, College Park spinout developing an organ viability assessment system to improve kidney transplant outcomes.

o Reston-Based Ellucian Names Stephen Laster as Chief Product Officer 

Reston, Va. — Ellucian, a Reston-based provider of software and services built to power higher education, has named Stephen Laster as its chief product officer (CPO). Laster will lead all aspects of the company’s product direction and strategy across its product, and research and development organizations. Through the deal, Lowes has implemented the company’s curbside pickup tool, FlyBuy, which uses machine-learning technology to accurately calculate a customer’s arrival time and on-premise location for curbside and in-store pickup programs.
